What is Humanitarian Assistance?

Humanitarian assistance refers to activities that safeguard the lives and fundamental rights of people facing crises caused by conflict, armed violence, natural disasters, disease, and similar emergencies. It goes beyond immediate relief to include efforts that prevent disasters and strengthen response capacity, with the aim of helping people in affected countries return to everyday life as before the disaster.

Four Core Principles and Objectives of Humanitarian Assistance

Humanity

Humanitarian action protects life and upholds human dignity.

Neutrality

Humanitarian actors do not take sides in political, religious, racial, or ideological disputes.

Impartiality

Humanitarian aid is provided on the basis of need, prioritizing those in greatest distress.

Independence

Humanitarian action remains autonomous from political and other interests.

Grounded in the Government of the Republic of Korea’s humanitarian assistance strategy and funding decisions, KOICA collaborates with a wide range of partners—including international organizations and NGOs—to deliver impartial and accountable support across escalating crises worldwide, from sudden-onset to protracted disasters, striving to build peace where everyone can live with dignity.
